FAQ

  • WHAT IS THE EMERALD ASH BORER?

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive beetle from Asia that attacks and kills all species of Ash trees. Since its discovery in the U.S. in 2002, EAB has killed hundreds of millions of Ash trees nationwide. Now that it has reached Oregon, every untreated Ash tree in the Portland area is at risk.

  • HOW CAN I TELL IF MY ASH TREE HAS EMERALD ASH BORER?

Early signs of Emerald Ash Borer infestation can be hard to spot. Common symptoms include thinning leaves in the canopy, small D-shaped exit holes in the bark, and increased woodpecker activity. Because damage often isn’t visible until it’s too late, preventative treatment is strongly recommended.

  • DO ASH TREES IN PORTLAND REALLY NEED TREATMENT?

Yes. Once Emerald Ash Borer is present in a region, untreated Ash trees almost always die within 2–3 years of infestation. Treatment is the only proven method to protect and preserve Ash trees in Portland and the surrounding areas.

  • HOW DOES EMERALD ASH BORER TREATMENT WORK?

At Ash Savers Northwest, we use specialized trunk injection treatments that deliver protection directly into the tree’s vascular system. This method is safe, effective and provides up to two years of protection from Emerald Ash Borer with each application.

  • WHEN SHOULD I START TREATMENT?

Immediately. The best time to treat Ash trees is before Emerald Ash Borer infestation begins. In Portland, preventative treatment should start now that the pest has been detected in the region. Waiting until visible damage appears may be too late.

  • HOW OFTEN DO ASH TREES NEED TO BE TREATMENT?

Most Ash trees require re-treatment every two years to remain fully protected from Emerald Ash Borer. Our team will provide a customized treatment schedule to ensure long-term protection for your trees.

  • IS TREATMENT SAFE FOR KIDS, PETS, WILDLIFE AND THE ENVIRONMENT?

Yes. The products we use are applied only inside the tree through trunk injections, not sprayed on leaves or soil. This targeted approach minimizes environmental impact and is safe for families, pets and surrounding wildlife.

  • HOW MUCH DOES TREATMENT COST COMPARED TO TREE REMOVAL?

The cost of treatment depends on the size and number of trees on your property. In general, treating an Ash tree is far more affordable than removing and replacing it. Many homeowners save thousands of dollars by choosing preservation over removal.
